How To Clean Your Siding

No matter where you live or what type of siding you have, it does get dirty and needs to be cleaned occasionally. Every siding material needs a different kind of love, and one must be careful to tend to theirs in a way that won’t damage it.

Plus, there’s no better feeling than clean! Whether it’s your car, kitchen or you’re home’s trim and siding. We’ve got the solution for you to get that dirt, mold & mildew washed away!

So, HOW do you clean your siding thoroughly and safely?

Here are some tips for cleaning your siding depending on what type you have:

  1. James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding: Wash down the exterior surfaces of your siding every 6 to 12 months with a garden hose or low pressure water spray to remove dirt and debris. James Hardie Products with ColorPlus® Technology can be cleaned using water and a soft brush or rag. For stubborn dirt or stains, a mild detergent and a soft brush may be used.

  2. Cedar Siding: Power washing can be used to clean cedar as long as the sprayer is set at a low pressure to prevent damaging the wood’s soft surface. Be careful—power-washing can be damaging to your home if you don’t know how to do it correctly. Or, simply, a hose and a scrub brush will do the trick.

  3. Vinyl Siding: Scrub brush and light detergent can be used here. Light power washing can be done but be sure it is on low pressure as vinyl can crack.

  4. Do you have a different type than those three? Always feel free to call us and ask!

When in doubt, try less intensive methods first to see if the siding can be cleaned up. No matter what kind of siding, you want to avoid harsh cleaning methods whenever possible.

Pro Tip: Top to bottom: Work a small section at a time, start from the top and work your way down to prevent dripping or streaking onto the cleaned area.
